As you may be aware, the “It Can Wait” campaign has already successfully had over 11,000,000 pledgers. It is these people that are making the decision to drive safer to allow a safer environment for all drivers, pedestrians, bikers, and more. You’ll note that the way to take part in this pledging is to take a photo of yourself with “It Can Wait” on your hand. This allows you to show the world and the people you care about that you are pledging to never drive distracted again.

Why do People Text and Drive?

There have been many studies and research done to find out whey texting and driving is so common. One article in Time, “Why People Text and Drive Even When They Know It’s Dangerous” by Justin Worland, exposes information from the drivers themselves. In fact, 3/4 drivers admitted to texting and driving in 2014. Then, the interesting part is that majority (98% of those surveyed) admitted that they knew that texting and driving was extremely dangerous,  still 75% say they do it anyways. This shows that even though people are educated on the potential dangers and effects of texting and driving it is a behavior issue, where they are doing it anyways.

“JUST STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING”

Many people that do not text and drive will often tell those guilty of texting and driving “just stop.” The problem is for some people, it is actually an addiction. As soon as they hear the “ting” or buzz of their phone when they get a text message, they cannot wait to see who texted them. Often it is because people are alone driving in the car and with technology at the point that it is at, people do not like to feel alone. They want to be involved and active in their friends and families lives 100% of the time. And, some research also shows that when a person answers a text message, sometimes it actually releases dopamine into their brains, which makes it even more irresistible.
